1st Annual Pumpkin Power Celebration

540 Pound Pumpkin Weighs In at 1st Annual Pumpkin Power Celebration

The winning pumpkin at Espanola's 1st Annual Pumpkin Power Celebration tipped the scales at 540 pounds. The pumpkin was grown by Ron Lewis of Whitefish from an Atlantic Giant seed and entered by Sean and Savannah Gallagher of Espanola.

The seed of the celebration grew from the Community In Motion funding from the Province of Ontario to promote healthy and active living. "Celebrating Pumpkin power is a creative way for us to promote vitamin A, carotene and active living" says Dianne Polden, Manager of Leisure Services. "As the 1st Annual, this celebration has been a resounding success; close to 200 people started the day with a pumpkin pancake breakfast. The 50 children who participated in our active obstacle course were rewarded with pumpkin soup prepared with the help of our After School Program. The Sudbury and District Health Unit sent us two volunteer community food advisors who sampled pumpkin hummus and promoted the virtues of high fibre and vitamin A. We look forward to growing more pumpkins, more partnerships and community engagement."

The 2nd Annual Pumpkin Power Celebration is slated for Saturday October 19th 2013.
