A Day in The Park

Community Media Release
March 27, 2018

A community fibre art project is underway in Espanola, Ontario. A collaborative project between the Espanola Fibre Arts Festival & the Espanola Public Library will support the creation of a massive fibre art installation that will be titled 'A Day in the Park'. Fibre artists and enthusiasts will be creating & contributing elements that represent their experiences enjoying park spaces. All components of the installation will be created from fibre – yarn, fabric, wood & paper. The results of several weeks of creation will culminate in a massive fibre art installation of 'A Day in the Park' during this year's 7th annual Espanola Fibre Arts Festival in October. The installation format and location(s) will be revealed as the time of the festival approaches in October.

The idea for the 'fibre art park' stems from local crochet guru Chantal Lafrance. Chantal was a major contributor to the Coral Reef Project of 2015 and has been thinking about this for many months.

Parks are special places in the northern culture and have great meaning for families and individuals. Day parks, provincial parks, federal parks, camp sites and shady picnic locations all evoke a sense of nostalgia and connectedness.

"The purpose behind this community fibre art collective is to bring together like minded individuals to create art together" says Lafrance. Creating together fosters community spirit and creates integral relationships within the creative community.

Meetings will be held at the Espanola Public Library the 2nd Wednesday each month from 6-8 PM beginning April 11th If you are interested in learning crochet or knitting techniques this fibre art project may be of interest to you. Each meeting will feature patterns, information and inspiration for the creation of bugs, birds, creatures, picnic fare and other 'park' inspired elements. No experience is necessary and everyone is welcome! Participants 12 and under accompanied by an adult please.

The Espanola Fibre Arts Festival will be accepting donations of yarn, fabric, knitting needles, crochet hooks and other fibre arts related materials to be shared within the collective. Donations can be dropped off at the Espanola Public Library.
