NEORA AWARDS OF RECOGNITION

Local active champions were recognized at the Northeastern Ontario Recreation Association’s awards banquet held in Espanola Sept. 26 – 29th, 2016.  NeORA acts as the representative voice for municipal recreation, community sports and active living in Northeastern Ontario.

NeORA awards are presented to individuals and/or groups to highlight outstanding contributions in the field of Sport and Recreation and Healthy Active Living in Northeastern Ontario.

ESPANOLA LIONS CLUB  - INITIATIVE AWARD
The Espanola Lions Club has been the foundation of community service in Espanola for decades sponsoring free swims for families every Saturday since 1999, when the doors first opened at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.  The group hosts a weekly TV Bingo to fundraise towards providing children with recreational opportunities, such as free swims and skates throughout the year.  The Club provides for the Lions Christmas telethon, the annual Teddy Bear toss, an annual  Christmas party and a Christmas gift program for needy families. The Club also gives to other community organizations that provide recreational programming and supports individuals who require specialized medical resources throughout the Lacloche catchment area.

ROCK TAYLOR –INITIATIVE AWARD
Rock Taylor was nominated as Champion of the Espanola Chapter of Jumpstart; a program that gives kids in need a chance to participate in sports in the Espanola and Manitoulin district.   Rock Taylor is also a member of the Espanola Lions Club and an active volunteer at the municipal outdoor rink.

PAULINE DEMONSKI – AWARD  OF DISTINCTION
Pauline Demonski is 80 years young.  Through her involvement with Heart Health, Pauline was instrumental in promoting and leading an indoor walking program at the Espanola High School for the last 12 years.  Pauline also runs a children’s Christmas party for 47 years in the town of McKerrow.  Pauline solicited businesses for donations to buy the presents for every child; gift wraps and organized the Christmas party.
