Espanola Fibre Arts Festival Receives OAC Funding

Espanola’s 5th Annual Fibre Arts Festival has been awarded $11,000 from the Ontario Arts Council.

Volunteer Coordinator, Jody Pilon, works year-round to launch the festival.   Without a major festival sponsor in 2015 Pilon sold baked goods from July to October at the Espanola Eat Local Market as the primary funder of the festival.    Pilon has grown the festival from its first year audience of 240 to almost 2000 this past season.  Pilon has held the ardent belief that the festival has the potential to become a sustainable, shoulder season attraction for the community.  “The support of the OAC will open up possibilities for festival growth and development, education and mentorship” says Pilon.  “This funding will be used to secure fibre masters to host workshops and build on the program value of the festival.”

The 5th Annual Pumpkin & Fibre Arts Festival runs annually the 3rd weekend of October.   “The OAC grant is a well earned boost to the festival,” says Cheryl Kennelly, Community Economic Development Officer for the Town of Espanola, “the robust festival growth is a credit to Pilon’s consistent delivery of a quality program and passionate commitment to community development.   With the support of our business sector and community organizations this festival has the potential to become a solid attraction adding significant cultural and economic value to our community & region.”
