Community Profile

The best of both worlds – stay and play in one of Northern Ontario’s most attractive and spectacular four season playgrounds. Located in the heart of the LaCloche Foothills, just 45 minutes west of the City of Sudbury, and 35 minutes from the North Channel with access to beautiful Georgian Bay.

Espanola is situated amongst pristine lakes, old growth forests and the rugged terrain of the Canadian Shield. Enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, or test your skill on our challenging 9 hole golf course. Winters offer snowmobilers access to some of the finest trails in the north as well as skiing, snowboarding and curling at our 100% volunteer‐run clubs.

Espanola is the regional retail and service hub of LaCloche Manitoulin. We are privileged to have a full service Recreation Complex complete with seasonal programming, a fitness centre, squash court, arena, attached library and Northern Ontario’s only public salt water pool.  The Regional Recreation Complex is also home to "The Espanola Express" our own NOJHL Junior 'A' Hockey Team.

Home to Northern Ontario’s largest Fibre Arts Festival, Espanola offers a rich sense of celebration, arts and culture. We proudly lay claim to Espanola Little Theatre, one of Northern Ontario’s longest running theatre troupes.  Our neighbouring communities and the City of Sudbury offer easy access to professional theatre, the symphony, a plethora of art tours and regional festivals.

Experience our spirit and quality of life in Espanola!

Community Testimonials

testimonial

We stayed in Espanola rather than moving back to Muskoka because the small town feel and welcoming community quickly made it feel like home. We have taken advantage of the many activities in Espanola and have joined multiple teams and made great friends over the past year. We are excited to start a family here and look forward to what our future in Espanola has to offer.

AMO Conference

Espanola, ONTARIO, August 14th, 2012

2012 AMO Conference Will Tackle Municipal Challenges

Espanola –Mayor Mike Lehoux and Deputy Mayor Jill Beer will be participating along with more than 1,600 delegates at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario's 2012 AMO Conference in Ottawa from August 19 to 22.

For more than 100 years, Ontario’s largest municipal conference has united municipal, provincial and federal officials to work collectively to overcome municipal challenges and plan for the future.

The Premier and the leaders of both opposition parties are featured speakers and as many as 15 federal and provincial ministers will participate in the conference.

This year’s program features close to 50 plenary sessions and workshops, and over 75 speakers, reflecting the broad scope of municipal responsibilities. Priority topics include leadership, municipal law, infrastructure, energy and conservation, public sector pensions, policing costs, accessibility, social housing, planning, water and wastewater treatment, waste diversion and biodiversity. Sessions will also cover pressing issues affecting municipalities, ranging from green energy and waste diversion to service delivery and infrastructure.

Mayor Lehoux and Deputy Mayor Beer are particularly interested in their discussions with the Minister of Natural Resources regarding the possible closure of the MNR office in Espanola. They will participate in many sessions and return to Espanola with information to be shared with all of council.

An abbreviated conference program can be downloaded from AMO’s website at www.amo.on.ca. Conference news releases, fact sheets and presentations from a number of key presenters will be posted on AMO’s web page throughout the duration of the conference at www.amo.on.ca.

AMO is a non-profit organization representing almost all of Ontario’s 444 municipal governments. AMO supports strong and effective municipal government in Ontario and promotes the value of municipal government as a vital and essential component of Ontario and Canada’s political system.

NEWS RELEASE

Espanola, Ontario/June 27, 2012

In an effort to support our neighbours in the City of Elliot Lake, Espanola’s Mayor & Council and municipal employees are collecting food in conjunction with the efforts of the United Church and churches of Espanola.

“The Elliot Lake Food Bank will need a sustained effort to keep their food bank stocked as many residents will be out of work as a result of the collapse of the Algo Centre Mall,” says Mayor Lehoux.  “This is a practical way for our community to lend support to our neighbours.”

Mayor and Council ask the community to join in support by dropping off donations for the Elliot Lake Food Bank at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.
