Visual artist and author Christi Belcourt is the 2014 recipient of the Ontario Arts Council Aboriginal Arts Award & the Northern Ontario Influential Women Aboriginal Leadership Award.

Christi’s work explores a variety of issues, including concerns for the environment, biodiversity, spirituality and Indigenous rights.

Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario,  the Gabriel Dumont Institute, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada, among other leading institutions.

Christi’s work commemorating residential school survivors and communities, Giniigaaniimenaaning (Looking Ahead), was rendered in stained glass and installed at Centre Block on Parliament Hill. It is only the second stained glass work to be commissioned for the Parliament buildings in recent years.

She is currently leading Walking With Our Sisters, a community-driven project that honours murdered or missing Indigenous women. Touring to 32 locations across North America through to the year 2020, the exhibit/memorial includes over 1,700 pairs of moccasin tops – intentionally not sewn into complete moccasins – that were created by over 1,300 people of all ages and cultural backgrounds.

Espanola Little Theatre

ELT has been drawing audiences to our community since the group’s inception in 1958 when it was co-founded by Sharon Sproule and Recreation Director Red McCarthy.

On Monday, February 2, 1959 the curtain went up on ELT's very first production, "High Ground" played in the B1 Gym at the Espanola High School.

Over the years ELT garnered a reputation internationally for theatrical excellence.  The ELT has been invited to three International Drama Festivals. The first was a showcase festival in Detroit where the group was asked to represent Theatre Canada. The other two competitive festivals were in St. John’s Newfoundland where the group swept the festival as outstanding production with five of the eight awards.  In Haapsalu, Estonia, ELT was honoured with two of three Jury awards, a special Jury award and was recognized as the most professional group at the festival.
