The review resulted in a recommendation to discontinue the guard service at the Mead/Spanish River Drive because the number of safe gap crossings fell within the limits, as determined by the School Crossing Guard Guide. "There remains however, a great concern for the safety of the children regarding vehicular traffic" stated Cynthia Townsend, CAO for the Town of Espanola, "caregivers are not using the designated drop off circle at the AB Ellis location but rather are stopping in the middle of Mead Boulevard to drop off students, this combined with the bus activity makes this area quite busy and unsafe, therefore this location has been reinstated as a permanent position under the crossing guard program."
Further review of the Hwy 6 location found that the number of elementary aged students crossing over the time period of 11:30 am - 1:30 pm did not warrant the need for a crossing guard at this location, however considering the multiple lanes of traffic, the program will be maintained from 11:30 am- 12:30pm only. No further reviews are anticipated until the final school relocations are completed.
With safety being at the forefront of everyone's mind, we ask that parents please use extreme caution when transporting their children to and from school and use the designated drop off areas. For more information contact:
