Giant Aquarium in Espanola

A squash court at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex will be transformed into a giant aquarium to house a fibre arts coral reef community art project.

Blue-green algae bloom reported in Lake Apsey

NEWS RELEASE

Espanola, ON / October 13, 2015

The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change has advised the Sudbury & District Health Unit and the Town of Espanola that results from samples taken October 6, 2015, from Lake Apsey are positive for blue-green algae(cyanobacteria).  The samples contained a species of cyanobacteria that can produce toxins.

Ontario Clean Water Agency has implemented standard operation procedures for water treatment with blue-green algae present.  The water treatment plant is designed to effectively remove the algae and regular testing is on-going to verify that it is effective.

Espanola Receives Funding to Provide Lifeguard Training Opportunities & Increase  Scope  of Aquatic Programs
Retention of Lifeguards and Aquatic Instructors is an ongoing challenge in small communities, “Every fall we lose our trained guards who leave for post-secondary education and quite often, we don’t have enough qualified people in training to replace them,” says Dianne Polden, Manager of Espanola Leisure Services.  “Given our ongoing challenge to staff the pool and sustain our aquatic programs we applied to the Ontario Sport & Recreation Communities Fund for funding to provide training opportunities to increase the capacity of qualified lifeguards and instructors.”

HEALTH UNIT ISSUES CLOSURE ORDER FOR CLEAR LAKE BEACH IN THE TOWN OF ESPANOLA

The Sudbury & District Health Unit is advising the public that the water at Clear Lake Beach in Espanola is unsafe for use by the public and has been rendered inaccessible by the Town of Espanola. A closure order has been issued today, to the Town of Espanola as a result of a large mass of Eurasian milfoil.
