ESPANOLA TO SKATE INTO THE NEW YEAR WITH REDUCED FEES

Espanola Town Council supported a recommendation from Leisure Services to streamline and reduce skating & shinny fees for 2017.

Skating fees were previously categorized by child, youth and adult, each with an assigned fee ranging from $4.50 to $5.00 plus tax. “Our new rate structure is easy for the public to remember and easy for us to implement says Manager of Leisure Service, Dianne Polden.  “With an aim to increase participation, skates will be a flat $3, the family rate will be a flat 7.50, and shinny will be a flat $4 for kids and seniors. In addition, the Monday, Wednesday and Friday noon Recreation Skate, which historically, has attracted a small cluster of seniors will be free.”

The new indoor ice rates will hopefully, coincide with the opening of the outdoor rink pending favourable weather conditions.  The outdoor rink on Second Avenue provides free opportunities to skate and play shinny.  “We are proud and excited to show off our new outdoor rink which is now a divided space to maximize usage for both shinny and public skating,” says Mayor Ron Piche.  “The divided space was the recommendation of Rock Taylor, a dedicated rink volunteer who identified the opportunity for improvement.  Reduced indoor fees and maximized outdoor space should encourage our community to get out and skate more.”
